This is the time of year when many of us pause and reflect on the past 365 days while preparing for the next 12 months. Williston Economic Development (WED) has seen significant growth in 2016 despite the decrease in prices for agriculture and energy commodities. Many major infrastructure improvements have been completed; there are more places to dine and shop; the STAR Fund has created new programs for entrepreneurs and the community is preparing to craft a plan for the mega Sloulin Redevelopment project. The following are some highlights from 2016:
January - STAR Fund introduces new C-4 grant programs for facility improvements in Downtown Williston; Williston Mayor Howard Klug receives Williston Area Chamber of Commerce's Western Star award
February - WED unveils Williston is Open for Business marketing campaign to promote economic opportunities in Williston; new economic profile sheets are released
March - Williston named fastest growing micropolitan for 5th consecutive year; WED facilitates selection of Cardon Global as manager of Sloulin Field Redevelopment project; Renaissance on Main opens in Downtown Williston; WED sponsors Williston Job Fair
April- Williston Center for Development celebrates grand opening with ribbon cutting and open house; WED begins releasing monthly Economic Outlook reports; WED helps coordinate Cleanup Williston
May - WED recognizes top entrepreneurs at annual awards luncheon
June - Gonzaga intern begins working for WED; Williston FBI office celebrates grand opening; Connecting Communities BBQ serves 350 in Watford City
July - WED sponsors three major events including the API Golf Tournament, Chamber Business After Hours and MonDak Ag Showcase; WED helps coordinate Cleanup Williston
August - new Williston High School opens; Babe Ruth World Series draws sold-out crowds; WED hosts annual Williston Economic Summit and Trade Show
September - WED hosts first Retail Summit; Family Crisis Shelter and Buck Scheele Family Animal Shelter break ground on new multi-million facilities; WED sponsors Job Fair
October - WED helps coordinate ground breaking of Williston Basin International Airport; WED sponsors Women in Leadership Expo at TrainND
November - Williston Fire Station 2 and Eugene Falcon Training Center open; David Tuan becomes City of Williston Administrator; City Hall completes 2016 remodeling project
December - STAR Fund unveils new financial incentives for day care providers, WED attracts more than 100 people to its annual Holiday Open House

Oil Companies are Hiring

Oil companies are hiring in the Bakken, and more jobs are expected to open up next year. Job Service North Dakota announced six oil companies are looking for workers to man fracking crews in the new year, said Cindy Sanford, customer service office manager of Job Service's Williston branch. She said she couldn't reveal the names of the companies due to confidentiality clauses, but said the companies are looking to hire 45 to 65 workers per crew which could equate to at least 300 hires. The North Dakota Department of Transportation (NDDOT) encourages motorists to stay informed of road conditions as they travel this holiday weekend.  NDDOT provides many tools for motorists including the NDRoads smartphone app, online Travel Information Map, text and email subscription service and 511.

ARC prepares for One Millionth Visitor

Since the WARC opened in 2014, it has been a popular gathering place for fitness enthusiasts, meetings, child care, birthday parties and much more!
Th e Williston Area Recreation Center (WARC) is just days away from reaching our 1,000,000th visitor! Since our March 2014 opening, almost 1,000,000 people have passed by the front desk at the WARC to use facilities, participate in recreational programs, and attend events.  We are excited to announce a special promotion to commemorate this milestone. The 1,000,000th visitor to the WARC will receive a free one year membership to the ARC! Thousands of lights are on display at Spring Lake Park nightly from 5:30-9:30 p.m. Spring Lake Park Holiday Lights Drive flier 

12/31             New Year's Eve Extravaganza
Ring in 2017 at the best party in town for students in the 7th-12th Grades!  From 8 p.m. until Midnight at the Raymond Family Community Center enjoy dancing, food, ice skating, and entertainment, and have the chance to win major prizes!

01/10             Williston City Commission
The commission meets the second and fourth Tuesday's of each month at 6 p.m. at City Hall.

01/14              Williston Bridal Expo
Local area experts from the wedding industry will be available from noon to 3 p.m. at the Grand Williston Hotel and Conference Center.

01/20             Williston Chamber Annual Banquet
Journey to "Paris" and enjoy an evening of entertainment, awards and networking.  The dinner and program will be held from 6-10 p.m. at the Grand Williston Hotel and Conference Center. Call the Chamber to reserve dinner tickets at 701-577-6000.
